Medical Drug Detox for Drug Addiction

At Rockland Recovery, we believe the safest and most effective approach to detox is medical drug detox. This means that this stage of recovery takes place in a drug detox center that is equipped to handle the medical and mental health needs of the individual as their body goes through the stages of detox.

Depending on the type of addictive drugs used and the severity or length of use, drug detox can produce serious symptoms and can be potentially dangerous without proper medical supervision. During this time, the patient is continually monitored by clinical staff so that they can respond swiftly in the event of a medical emergency.

While the physical symptoms of drug detox can be severe, it’s also important to acknowledge the mental health risks. Increased anxiety, agitation, and violence aren’t uncommon, and detox may also aggravate existing mental health disorders. Mental health professionals can help the patient through these challenges in the safety of a medical detoxification center.

In some cases, especially with detox from opioids, medications may be used during detox. This approach is called medicated-assisted therapy (MAT). These medications can help reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms and be used to continually support the individual as they move on to the next stages of drug addiction treatment.

Next Steps After Drug Detox

Detoxification from drugs is the first important step to overcoming drug addiction. The quality and effectiveness of a drug detox program set the foundation for the next stages of recovery. There’s a level of uncertainty, maybe mixed with feelings of fear and confusion, when entering treatment for addiction. What comes next can be life-transforming, and the unknowns and fear of failure can make this a very challenging time.

Rockland Recovery is committed to supporting the whole person in recovery from drug addiction. We don’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach; we work with the individual to find the treatment plan that is best suited for them.

Inpatient Treatment in Massachusetts

For many, this begins with an inpatient drug addiction program before moving on to less structured programs, but there are other options available.

Inpatient treatment is highly recommended due to how difficult it can be to maintain sobriety immediately following detox, and inpatient programs offer the highest level of structure and 24/7 support. However, this might not be the best option, or even feasible, for everyone.

Outpatient Treatment Options

When inpatient treatment isn’t the best option, our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the next step. This intensive day program requires an average daily commitment of six hours.

During this time, individuals take part in a number of different therapies and treatments in a plan that has been tailored specifically to their needs. An example of treatments and therapies include:

Continuum of Care for Drug Addiction Treatment

Recovery from drug addiction is a lifelong journey, which is why Rockland Recovery offers a comprehensive continuum of care following drug detox to set you up for long-term success and victory over drug addiction.

Drug detox requires continual supervision and support. The next steps of recovery are intensive, often requiring 24/7 structure and access to clinical and support staff. What comes next is a journey that brings you closer to independent living, free of drugs, with each step.

After detox and inpatient treatment, the continuum of care continues with a spectrum of outpatient programs. These range from highly intensive partial hospitalization to traditional outpatient therapies with tapering levels of structure and commitment. Options like our Intensive Outpatient Program offer a bridge between highly intensive and less intensive treatments.

At Rockland Recovery, we believe in supporting the individual through every step. We also offer aftercare planning, sober living, and alumni programs for continued support and ease of transitioning into a life free of drug addiction. We’re also here to help should relapse occur.
