The Healing Power of Group Therapy in Addiction Recovery

Group therapy in Addiction Recovery at Rockland Recovery Group in Braintree MA

One of the most powerful parts of addiction recovery is connection. Many people come into treatment feeling isolated, ashamed, or like no one could possibly understand what they have been through. Group therapy helps break that isolation.

At Rockland Recovery, group therapy is a central part of the healing process. It creates a space where people can share openly, listen to others with similar experiences, and begin to rebuild trust and connection.

For Primary Clinician Alicia Lambert, LADC II, facilitating groups is one of the most meaningful parts of her work.

“I love connecting with clients and observing the healing that happens in group therapy. The connections people make, the vulnerability they show, and the inspiring stories that come out of those moments are incredible to witness.”

— Alicia Lambert, LADC II

Group therapy allows people to see that they are not alone in their struggles. Often, clients come into a group unsure of what to expect. Over time, they begin to open up, support one another, and find strength in the shared experience of recovery.

Creative Approaches to Self Exploration

Alicia often leads creative and experiential groups that help clients explore their inner world in different ways. These groups use writing practices such as non-dominant handwriting, projection writing, and creative prompts that encourage reflection and honesty.

Creative expression can help people access thoughts and emotions that are sometimes difficult to talk about directly.

Her expressive art groups may include activities like watercolor painting, collaging, poetry, mirror work, and body movement exercises. These approaches allow clients to process emotions in ways that go beyond traditional talk therapy.

Experiential Exercises That Bring Insight to Life

In addition to creative work, Alicia also facilitates experiential therapeutic exercises that help clients better understand their thoughts, feelings, and relationships.

Some of these exercises include inner-child work, Gestalt’s Empty Chair exercise, and CBT-based activities such as “Thoughts on Trial.” These methods allow clients to actively engage with their experiences rather than simply talking about them.

She also incorporates contemplative practices, such as guided meditation and reflective exercises, and sometimes uses music to deepen emotional awareness and reflection.

The Power of Shared Healing

One of the most meaningful parts of group therapy is watching people begin to transform. As trust builds in the group, clients often start to feel safe enough to share honestly and support one another.

Those moments of connection can be incredibly powerful.

“It is truly an honor to sit alongside each client on their journey,” Alicia says. “I do not take that responsibility lightly.”

Recovery is not something anyone has to face alone. Through connection, creativity, and shared experiences, group therapy helps people rediscover hope and begin building a new path forward.
