The individual nature of addiction demands multiple approaches to treatment. At Rockland Recovery, we offer a full continuum of care when it comes to addiction treatment, including outpatient treatment services.
Individuals who have completed inpatient treatment or require a less intensive level of structure and support may find that our holistic, evidence-based outpatient rehab program is exactly what they need.

What Is Outpatient Rehab?
We view addiction recovery as a continuum of care. At one end, there’s detox and inpatient rehab. On the other, programs like sober living and aftercare planning help individuals transition to independent living. Outpatient treatment, which provides a balance between these two, is found in the middle of this spectrum.
Outpatient treatment is less structured and restricted than inpatient programs. Unlike inpatient programs, which require a residential stay, outpatient programs offer the flexibility to manage daily life and responsibilities while attending rehab.
Rather than receiving treatment daily, a plan is developed based on individual needs and progress. Some individuals attend various types of addiction therapies almost daily, while others may attend only a couple of sessions each week.
Who Is a Good Fit for Outpatient Addiction Treatment
At Rockland Recovery, we are dedicated to delivering the highest level of care to every individual. This commitment includes conducting an assessment to determine the most suitable level of treatment based on their needs and goals. While outpatient treatment is often preferred, it isn’t ideal for everyone.
Inpatient treatment may be more appropriate if you or your loved one is battling severe addiction or lacks a strong support network. Outpatient rehab offers various levels of support and structure, but it may not provide sufficient support for those just starting their recovery or those who are at risk of relapse.
A good candidate for outpatient treatment may be:
- Someone who has completed inpatient rehab and no longer requires 24/7 support
- Someone who has been in treatment in the past and needs outpatient treatment to prevent relapse
- Someone who acknowledges their addiction but hasn’t yet reached a crisis point
- Someone who has a strong family support network and a safe place to stay, away from triggering people and situations
- Someone who is willing to be accountable and responsible for themselves
- Single parents who aren’t able to spend time away from their children
- Someone who may find taking time off of work for inpatient rehab to be a financial burden, for example, self-employed or small business owners who don’t have paid time off
Types of Outpatient Therapy for Addiction
Individuals in outpatient rehab have access to many of the same treatments and therapies as inpatient rehab. These options include individual and family therapy, group therapy or support groups, mental health care, medication-assisted treatment, case management, and relapse prevention services.
At Rockland Recovery, we offer two main categories of outpatient therapy for addiction – Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP). The difference lies in the level of structure and commitment.
PHP is a bridge between inpatient and IOP, offering the highest level of care, short of inpatient services. IOP also offers a high level of support, but frequency and types of treatments begin to taper off as the individual moves closer toward recovery.
Both levels of care are built around our evidence-based addiction treatment programs and are facilitated by our staff. They offer years of expertise in every area of addiction care.
